QUESTION  5

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the Xen Glaucoma Treatment System in November 2016. The system is used to treat intraocular pressure (IOP) in patients with refractory glaucoma or in patients with primary open angle glaucoma and pseudoexfoliative or pigmentary glaucoma with open angles that are unresponsive to maximum tolerated medical therapy. The system consists of an implantable gel stent and an injector. Is there a Level II HCPCS codes that describes the Xen Glaucoma Treatment System?

ANSWER

Yes, HCPCS code C1783, Ocular implant, aqueous drainage assist device, should be used to report the Xen Glaucoma Treatment System. This code describes intraocular pressure lowering implant devices that are used for the treatment of glaucoma. HCPCS code C1783 would be appropriately reported with CPT procedure code 0449T, Insertion of aqueous drainage device, without extraocular reservoir, internal approach, into the subconjunctival space; initial device, and CPT code 0450T, Insertion of aqueous drainage device, without extraocular reservoir, internal approach, into the subconjunctival space; each additional device, when performed.
