Question:
A tonsillectomy was performed on a 40-year-old patient. A small amount of adenoid hypertrophy was noted within the nasopharynx. The surgeon ablated the small amount of adenoid hypertrophy from the nasopharynx in addition to performing the tonsillectomy. The surgeon stated he did not perform an adenoidectomy when he ablated the small amount of tissue. What is the appropriate code to report for this procedure?
Answer:
It would be appropriate to report code 42826, Tonsillectomy, primary or secondary; age 12 or over. If the additional work of ablating of the adenoid hypertrophy was substantially greater than what is typically required, consider appending modifier 22, Increased Procedural Services, to code 42826.
