Question:
When a surgeon performs a revision total knee arthroplasty with polyethylene component exchange only, one or both components (27486 or 27487), is it appropriate to report modifier 52 with either code? Or would only code 27486 be reported with modifier 52?
Answer:
When a polyethylene exchange for a single component is performed, report code 27486, Revision of total knee arthroplasty, with or without allograft; 1 component for a polyethylene single component exchange, with modifier 52, Reduced Services, appended. If a polyethylene exchange is performed in both components, then code 27487 may be reported with modifier 52.
